Maxillofacial Surgery I - Theoretical TDNT 5261

Course description:

This course is designed to give the dental students a basic understanding of the specialty of maxillofacial surgery; the process of diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive management of diseases, deformities and malformations of the maxillofacial and associated structures. The material presented is structured to help the student acquire: facial trauma, principles in management of facial, dentoalveolar,  mandibular, Maxillary (Le Fort), Zygomatic maxillary, nasal, and frontal fractures, maxillary sinus pathology and diseases, maxillary sinus procedures, treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pathology and fractures, management and drug therapy, closure of oroantral fistula, salivary glands surgery, management of head and neck infections,  clinical and radiographic evaluation of sinusitis and management.

Course Aims:

This course aims to introduce students to the basics of maxillofacial surgical procedures.

Course outcomes:

After completing this course, the student should be able to:
  • Understand the basic anatomy that maxillofacial surgeons will encounter during the management of surgical patients and the development of anatomical systems.
  • Understand the normal physiological processes at different ages and to understand the effects of disease and trauma in these processes as they relate to maxillofacial surgery.
  • Understand pathological processes as they present in the common maxillofacial diseases/conditions/illnesses.
  • Identify the anatomy of temporomandibular joint and its disorder management.
  • Understand the uses and effects of therapeutic agents used in the treatment of conditions presenting to the maxillofacial surgeon.
  • Diagnose and treat infections around the oral cavity including incision and drainage of dental abscesses.
  • Identify anatomy of fascial spaces, diagnosis and management of severe odontogenic infections.
  • Identify the anatomy of the sinuses and inflammation that occurs with sinusitis and how to deal with it.
  • Diagnose different facial fractures dentoalveolar and mandibular fractures and know how to manage them including firstaid procedures.
