Maxillofacial Surgery II - Theoretical TDNT 5174

Course description:

This course is a continuation to maxillofacial surgery I, It provides an overview of surgical aids to pathology with special reference to biopsy, and an introduction to tumors and their diagnosis and principles of management. The course also provides basic knowledge of diagnosis and management of craniofacial deformities, , principles of orthognathic surgery,  jaw reconstruction, cosmetic facial surgery and management of hospital patients, osteomyelitis,  review of muscles of mastication; evaluation of function, radiographic techniques and interpretation -tomography, CT scan, conservative therapy, ankyloses, internal derangement, arthritis, degenerative joint disease-surgical,  anatomy of cleft lip and /or palate and surgical timeline for repair, velopharyngeal dysfunction , osteoradionecrosis, periapical lesions. 

Course Aims:

This course aims to provide the student with the required knowledge and skills to play a role in diagnosis and management of lesions in the maxillofacial area and craniofacial disorders and discrepancies.

Course outcomes:

After completing this course, the student should be able to:
  • Identify wound classification and have the ability to manage facial wounds. Assist in the early diagnosis of maxillofacial malignancy by performing a biopsy fromsuspected maxillofacial lesions. 
  • Diagnosis and treatment of maxillofacial and maxillofacial infections, salivary gland diseases, and soft and hard tissue pathology (benign and malignant).
  • Assist in the diagnosis of craniofacial deformities, skeletal discrepancies and cosmetic facial surgeries.
  • Know how to manage a hospital patient regarding preoperative preparation, postoperative care and complications.
  • Identify and manage osteomyelitis, ankyloses, internal derangement, arthritis, degenerative joint disease-surgical.
  • Discuss the cleft palate or cleft lip development ,causes and treatment.
