Course description:

This course the last theoretical course in periodontology and covers the surgical approaches in the management of moderate to advanced periodontal diseases, the role of occlusion in periodontal diseases.

Course Aims:

The aim of this course is to provide students with the knowledge needed for the the surgical management of periodontitis.

Course outcomes:

At the end of this course, the students should be able to:
  • Choose an appropriate treatment approach for individual patients.
  • Understand the role of trauma from occlusion in the etiology of periodontal disease.
  • Understand the treatment options for vertical bone defects.
  • Describe the indications and contraindications and procedures of specific periodontal surgical techniques (root coverage etc.).
  • Understand the objectives and different techniques of crown lengthening and pre-restorative procedures.
  • Understand the principles of periodontal plastic surgery.
  • Understand the importance of post-surgical follow-up and wound healing.
