Course description:

The course introduces the basic principles of fixed prosthodontics. Topics including : introduction about fixed prosthodontics, Instruments used for fixed prosthodontics ,different types of individual impression trays used for crown- and bridgework, their indications, tooth preparation, principles of tooth reduction for extra-coronal restoration, the indications and requirements for temporary reconstructions and the basic knowledge of different materials such as ceramic, cements, impression materials and other materials used in fixed prosthodontics, groups of impression materials and their handling procedures.

Course Aims:

This course aims to provide to students  with the fundamental knowledge and principles of fixed prosthodontics.

Course outcomes:

After completing the course, students should be able to:
  • Be familiar with the different types of tooth preparations used for crown- and bridgework and how they correlate with the material used. 
  • Know the basic principles of tooth preparation, how to achieve optimal retention- and resistance forms, preparation of margins and how to take into account the occlusal forces applied by the patients. 
  • Know the difference between different groups of impression materials and their handling procedures. 
  • Know how to produce working casts and prepare them for the production of a reconstruction. 
  • Know how to wax-up a metal crown, invest the wax-up, cast it in metal and do the final finishing and polishing of the crown. 
  • Know the chemical composition of different alloys used for crown and bridgework. 
  • Basic knowledge of the material science of different materials such as ceramic, cements, impression materials and other materials used in fixed prosthodontics. 
  • Know the different types of build-ups for endodontically treated teeth, both direct build-up with fiberpost and composite and indirect post and core.
