Periodontology II - Theoretical TDNT 3130

Course description:

The course is a continuation for Periodontology 1, the examination, diagnosis, treatment planning of periodontal cases are covered in this course.Periodontal examination and history taking, the importance of plaque control and how to motivate patients to practice oral hygiene, instruments and instrumentation techniques in periodontology are also covered. The principles and techniques of disease prevention therapy are also emphasized. Presentation of simple and more complex cases (Images and radiographs) will give the students the ability to diagnose periodontal conditions and assist the prognosis of diseased teeth.a

Course Aims:

The course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge about periodontal conditions, etiology and risk factors involved in the development of periodontal diseases and basic knowledge needed for the coming clinical courses.

Course outcomes:

At the end of this course, the students should be able to:
  • Differentiate between periodontal diseases and know the etiology and pathogenesis of each type.
  • Obtain the patient´s history of periodontal disease as well as examine the patient and record the findings into the appropriate forms.
  • Recognize the clinical and radiographic signs of periodontal diseases.
  • Know the main etiological factors of periodontal diseases.
  • Familiar with the selection of oral hygienic aids available to the public, and become competent in motivating and instructing his patients in proper oral hygiene.
  • Knows basic periodontal instruments and their uses.
  • Knows different techniques in supragingival scaling.
