Dental Materials II - Theoretical TDNT 2222

Course description:

This course provides basic information about direct and indirect restorative materials .It provides the necessary tools and principles of dental materials that are currently used in clinical dentistry and covers the underlying principles of their functional properties, bioactivity and biocompatibility, including the main dental materials used in conservative dentistry, removable and fixed prosthesis materials and preventive dentistry such as amalgam, composites, glass ionomer, adhesive systems and cements, metals and alloys, ceramics, investment and refractory dies, endodontic and bleaching materials and implant materials.

Course Aims:

  • To evaluate current and future biomaterials in the light of a sound knowledge of basic material and biomaterials science. 
  • To obtain appropriate information about biomaterials and communicate relevant information to peers, patients and the lay public.
  • To equip the undergraduate with the knowledge, understanding and transferable skills required to select dental biomaterials effectively.

Course outcomes:

  • Have an understanding of how to correctly manipulate and use the various restorative, adhesive and other clinical materials when providing dental care in different fields including operative, preventive, prosthetic and aesthetic dentistry.
  • Identify and become familiar with the main characteristics and properties of dental materials, allowing them to understand the rationale for their use.
  • Acquire a knowledge and understanding of:
    • Dental casting alloy.
    • Joining of metals.
    • Dental amalgam.
    • Direct aesthetics restorative materials.
    • Dental cement.
    • Dental ceramic.
    • Tissue conditioners materials.
