Course description:

The course  provides students an introduction in the handling and manipulating of dental materials is designed to improve proficiency and efficiency at chair-side procedures, emphasis on principles of physical and chemical properties of gypsum, impression materials, waxes, custom trays and basic principles and asepsis of laboratory procedures, including fixed prosthetic materials and gold products.

Course Aims:

The course aims to teach the student of dentistry aspects of materials science necessary to enable him/her to understand the basic physical, chemical and mechanical properties of dental materials as they relate to the clinical applications.

Course outcomes:

After completing this course, students should acquire a knowledge and understanding of:
  • Mechanical, physical, chemical, optical and biological properties of the most common dental biomaterials.
  • Adhesion and bonding, tarnish and corrosion, and metallurgy.
  • Model and die materials.
  • Investment materials.
  • Impression materials.
  • Polymer and nonmetallic denture base materials.
  • Dental waxes.
