Head & Neck Anatomy - Theoretical TDNT 2213

Course description:

This course deals with the thorough study of the head and neck at the macroscopic level. The emphasis is on the maxillofacial structures, pharyngeal regions and its facial planes.  Clinical correlations included to integrate anatomy with dentistry. This course presents a detailed study of the skeletal, muscular, vascular and neural features of the head and neck.

Course Aims:

The course aims to provide the student with the required knowledge of head and neck anatomy and the correlations between the oral cavity and neighboring structures.

Course outcomes:

After completing this course, students should be able to:
  • Understand the anatomy of the neck; triangles and their contents, visceral compartment, fascial planes, root of the neck and its continuity with the mediastinum.
  • Describe the osteology of the skull, with reference to muscular attachments, cranial nerves and blood supply of head and neck.
  • Describe the face and parotid region, with emphasis on the muscles of facial expression.
  • Understand the temporal/infratemporal regions, with emphasis on muscles of mastication and temporomandibular joint structure and function.
  • Describe the anatomy of the special senses of the head; the orbit (vision), nasal cavities (smell), and ear (hearing and equilibrium).
  • Identify the soft structures of the oral cavity, tongue, palate, pharynx, larynx, submandibular and pterygopalatine regions as observed in the bisected head.
  • Understand the lymphatic drainage of head and neck, with emphasis on spread of metastases.
