Course description:

This course is a continuation to oral and dental anatomy (1).This course acquaints the student with morphologic components of the natural dentition including essential vocabulary and details of the anatomy of teeth and the relationship of anatomic structures to caries formation and tooth restoration.

Course Aims:

This course aims to introduce students to anatomic and physiology considerations of form and function.

Course outcomes:

After completing this course, students should be able to:
  • Distinguish the morphological features of the primary and permanent teeth that relate to their identification and differentiation. 
  • Describe how root and crown morphology may impact on dental hygiene services. 
  • Describe and identify intra-oral, soft and hard tissues and landmarks. 
  • Describe the basic histological characteristics of enamel, dentin, cementum and the periodontal ligament. 
  • Explain how oral tissues are adapted to meet functional needs. 
  • Record basic dental and oral observations using correct terminology and abbreviations with assistance. 
  • Demonstrate professionalism by taking responsibility for learning, and making constructive contributions to the learning of others through course activities. 
  • Know the sequence of eruption in each arch for both dentitions and its need in pediatric dentistry, orthodontics and forensic science.
