Oral and Dental Anatomy 1 - Theoretical TDNT 1108

Course description:

The coursecoversthe anatomy and physiology of the teeth and oral structures. There will be emphasis on identification of primary and permanent teeth, classification of occlusion, and description and location of anatomical structures of the head and neck.

Course Aims:

This course aims to introduce students to the exact standards and basic anatomical features of the mouth and teeth.

Course outcomes:

After completing this course, students should be able to:
  • Recognize the importance of having two sets of dentitions in most mammals and to relate form to function in dental anatomy.
  • Learn and apply the chronological standards of stages of deciduous and permanent tooth development and eruption.
  • Describe the basic histological characteristics of enamel, dentin, cementum and the periodontal ligament. 
  • Record basic dental and oral observations using correct terminology and abbreviations with assistance.
  • Recognize and categorize primary and secondary teeth according to form and function.
  • Identify and understand the connection between the morphology of the teeth and possible disease related outcomes and preventive measures.
  • Understand the basic principles of occlusion.
  • Integrate the basic concepts of the functional and anatomical relationships of the head and neck region. 
  • Identify, locate, and relate anatomical structures of the head and neck and oral cavity to the rest of the body.
