Ethics for Health Care Professions PHLT 2109

Course description:

The course explores the history of nutrition and gives an overview of the evolution of nutrition as a distinct profession focus on the patient.  Law and ethics of nutrition practice, including: nutrition laws; the nature and scope of nutrition practice, drug usages, the role of various government agencies; potential bases for discipline or other liability; licensure requirements. Students will learn the governmental framework within which nutrition is practiced, as well as acquire an understanding of the laws, regulations, and the ethical responsibilities applicable to nutritionist so that they will be able to protect the public and ensure patients’ wellbeing.

Course Aims:

The course will provide students with an understanding of:
  • Regulations promulgated by Palestinian Ministry of health that directly impact the profession of nutrition and the nutritionist Syndicate. 
  • The interrelationship of nutrition law and ethics, including legal/ethical workplace issues such as professional negligence/malpractice, patient privacy, and conscientious objection.

Course outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:  
  • Understand the development of nutrition as a patient-centered profession.
  • Know the key issues in the history of nutrition.
  • Appreciate the complex interaction between nutrition and society and the state.
  • Know the historical roots of nutritional education. 
  • Know the nutritional tradition and culture.
  • Know the nutrition laws and ethics (local and regional).
