Psycho-Sociology for Health Professions PHLT 1302

Course description:

This course is multidisciplinary comprising elements of psychology and sociology relevant to the practice of allied health professionals.

Course Aims:

At the end of the course study; The nutritionist student will be able to: 
  • Describe, compare and contrast the approaches to health used by the different fields of social psychology, health sociology and health psychology.
  • Identify and describe diverse influences such as culture, social structures, socioeconomic status, and group norms on human health and health equity.
  • Explain how diversity in thoughts, feelings and attitudes impact health disparities and health outcomes. 
  • Compare behavior change theories and evaluate when a particular theory should be used.
  • Identify personal and community behaviors and the consequences of those behaviors as they relate to health status and health outcomes.

Course outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, student will be able to:
  • identify the biopsychsocial model and multi-dimintions factors of health.
  • identify the theoretical basis of sociology and the relevance of this to wellbeing, health and illness.
  • identify the theoretical basis of psychology and the relevance of this to wellbeing, health and illness.
  • identify and describe key social aspects of, culture, class and social interaction as relevant to health behavior.
  • identify and describe basic concepts of human behavior, personality and motivation as relate to health  behavior.
