Introduction to Public Health PHLT 1205

Course description:

This course focuses on the general principles, fundamentals and practices of public health, meanwhile, concentrate on the diseases and preventive levels (primary, secondary and tertiary) and methods. 
The course also aims to define the role of health care givers through the different level of prevention. Knowing the different aspects of public health as family, population, occupational and community health as well as epidemiology and biostatistics. The course also shows the interrelation between health and diseases and the impact of environmental factors.

Course Aims:

  • Define public health and identify various professions, disciplines, organizations, and delivery systems within the field of public health in Palestine.
  • Identify key concepts and strategies of health protection levels, health promotion, and health policy. 
  • Understand foundational principles of demography and epidemiology as they relate to public health practice in Palestine. 
  • Discuss how inequity and the social determinants influence population health in Palestine.
  • Describe key interventions and approaches used to improve population health in Palestine.

Course outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  • Understand the historical development for public health and its crucial role. 
  • Know the correlation between the different components of public health regiments.
  • Recognize the levels of preventions, diagnosis, monitoring and controlling of non-communicable diseases as well as infectious one.
  • Recognize the impact of behavior, social, economic, educational status on public health.  
  • Apply the general public health principles and concepts on current Palestinians public health issues.
