Maxillofacial Surgery I - Clinical PDNT 5161

Course description:

This course includes clinical application of previously acquired knowledge in maxillofacial surgery I. The students are given the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and gain experience in minor surgical procedures and to be exposed to numerous maxillofacial problems and treatment modalities.

Course Aims:

The course aims at preparing the students to be capable of diagnosing and comprehending different cases related to maxillofacial surgery. Also, the course aims to acquire the competencies and specialist surgical skills that will form the basis for safe clinical practice in the maxillofacial surgery.

Course outcomes:

After completion the course, students should be able to:
  • Have competence in basic operative skills.
  • Have competence in the basic perioperative care of the surgical patient.
  • Have competence in the diagnosis and clinical management of common maxillofacial conditions.
  • Have competence in the operative management of a range of common maxillofacial conditions.
  • Have competence in (incision and drainage procedures), and surgical management of benign and malignant neoplasms and cysts.
  • Perform transalveolar (open) extraction procedures, including of impacted third molars, impacted canines, malposed teeth, supernumerary teeth.
  • Remove bone and perform tooth sectioning when indicated.
  • Assess and have the basic knowledge of endodontic and preprosthetic surgical procedures including frenectomy, alveoloplasty, vestibuloplasty, removal of bony exostosis, and tori.
  • Perform many of the preprosthetic and endodontic surgeries under supervision of the instructors.
