Endodontics II - Preclinical PDNT 3132

Course description:

Endodontic techniques will be demonstrated under conditions which simulate theClinical situation. A mixture of plastic tooth models for introductory techniquesfollowed by extracted human teeth may be used for pre-clinical technique exercises.Exercises will  involve the preparation of access cavitiesin a variety of tooth types (i.e. incisors, premolars, molars form both maxillary andmandibular arches), followed by the determination of working length, chemo-mechanical debridement and preparation of the root canals and subsequent root canal filling of at least five teeth (maxillary incisor, mandibular incisor, maxillarypremolar, maxillary and mandibular multi-canal molars). The teaching of endodontic techniques can be enhanced by having recorded or live visual demonstrations on patients to illustrate the techniques being taught.

Course Aims:

This course aims to enable student to handle the root canal instruments, materials and to practice teeth  extractioncorrectly in many plastic tooth models.

Course outcomes:

By completing this course, the student should be able to:
    • Become familiar with different periapical radiograph technique and interpretation of pulpal morphology.
    • Master rubber dam application.
    • Outline and prepare the access cavity for root canal treatment of each tooth.
    • Master the different mechanical technique in root canal cleaning and disinfected materials.
    • Master the different technique in obturation.
    • Practice the asepsis and infection control protocol in endodontic treatment.
