Periodontology II - Preclinical PDNT 3130

Course description:

The course covers the pre and clinical part of knowledge studied in Periodontology 2 (Theory) and includes: examination, diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment of patients with periodontal diseases,the uses of instruments, and instrumentation techniques in periodontology, the principles and techniques of disease prevention therapy and infection control are practically emphasized, ans simple methods of digital dental imaging.

Course Aims:

This course aims to enable the students instructing their first patient effectively in oral hygiene and to treat simple cases of periodontal diseases.

Course outcomes:

At the end of this course, the students should be able to:
  • Examine and take history of periodontal disease patients.
  • Take medical and dental history.
  • Practice oral hygiene and oral hygiene instructions effectively.
  • Discuss periodontal care with patients.
  • Clinically distinguish between healthy and diseased periodontium.
  • Clinically diagnose different periodontal diseases.
  • Identify plaque and calculus (supra- and sub-gingival) and know how to remove it.
  • Use and manipulate periodontal instruments with care and rationality.
  • Competent in the supragingival scaling of teeth and root planing of teeth with slight to moderate periodontal pockets.
  • Competent in finding and evaluating scientific information on the subject of periodontology.
