Dental Materials I - Practical PDNT 2119

Course description:

This course provides laboratory/clinical applications of dental materials in the oral environment.  From this knowledge base, students learn to understand the role of dental materials in the delivery of preventative and restorative care.  The composition, properties, and manipulation of materials used in dentistry, as well as procedures used during application, will be emphasized.

Course Aims:

The course aims to provide the students with the principles of the science of Dental Materials and related technologies and to acquaint them with the materials used in the dental health field.

Course outcomes:

After completing this course, students should be able to:
  • Differentiate between the various types of dental materials and their respective properties and manipulate materials used in dentistry.
  • Identify the materials commonly used in dentistry for restorative and lab procedures.
  • Demonstrate safe and appropriate handling of these materials.
  • Manipulate with alginate impression material and take primary impression (one primary impression).
  • Manipulate with elastomers impression materials and take secondary impression (one secondary impression).
  • Manipulate with different types of gypsum materials and pouring impression.
  • Make working cast with removable die, pindex system (one working cast).
  • Handle the dental wax and make wax pattern and sprue (two crown).
  • Manipulate with investment materials.
  • Manipulate with casting technology (one metal crown).
