Course description:

This course will cover the food and nutrition security determinants in global, region and Palestine, covering the accessibility, availability, utilization and stability of food and its effect on nutrition status among various segment of population, the course will cover the political, economic, socials factors and their impact on food and nutrition security. Meanwhile, highlight on climate change, governmental policies, trade, role of G8, UN agencies.
Through lecture, discussion, case studies, and secondary data analysis, students will be able to understands how to eradicate poverty, MDGs, change in sustainable agricultural, the political-ecologies of agriculture; the emerging alternative roles of agriculture to food production.Students will be able to recognize the tools and indicators used to determine the food and nutrition insecurity.

Course Aims:

The course aims to:
  • An understanding of food and nutrition security in Palestine and internationally.
  • The capacity to critically assess theoretical and conceptual issues relating to the emerging risks both to food and nutrition security.
  • The ability to analyze the relationship between food and nutrition and society, environment, political and economic factors.
  • The capacity to translate generic concepts and methods into reviews of current, real-world food production, exchange and policy using a variety of methods of conceptualization and critical analysis.


Course outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, student will be able to:
  • The ability to present synthesized and critically evaluated information in oral and written forms.
  • The ability to work effectively to create outputs of professional quality, both independently and within team environments.
  • Able to correlate the poverty, hunger, malnutrition, diseases and gender.
  • Able to recognize the role of coordination between all parties to eliminate food and nutrition insecurity in developing countries.  
  • Able to know the best methods to eradicate hunger and malnutrition (approaches and strategies).
