Diseases of Malnutrition NUTR 3220

Course description:

This course focuses on the causal factors for malnutrition, malnutrition definition & types/forms. Also focuses on micronutrient and macronutrient deficiencies. The course introduce the principles of the management of nutritional deficiencies in infants, children and pregnant women. The course will provides students with sufficient knowledge and skills on assessment, diagnosis and admission of malnourished cases. The course also describing the entire case identification, management and handling of complicated medical cases.

Course Aims:

  • To develop intellectual and practical skills of the students in Assessment, Diagnosis & Management of malnutrition.
  • To explain the term  of acute malnutrition & the chronic malnutrition.
  • To list possible approaches for identifying, preventing and managing of malnutrition.
  • To explain the management of complications and identify and treat the major problems associated withmalnutrition.
  • To develop intellectual and practical skills of the students in programme performance, monitoring indicators, facility record and reporting.

Course outcomes:

After completing this course, the student should be able to:
  • Assess, Diagnose & Manage of malnutrition cases.
  • List the screening schedules for identifying Iron deficiency anemia and vitamin A deficiency in Infants, Children and pregnant women.
  • Diagnose severe anemia through visible symptoms and Hb. or Hct. measures.
  • Provide treatment and follow up for children with  anemia and severe anemia who can be treated in the PHC or  referred to hospital.
