Course description:

This course is designed to provide each student a basic understanding of tourism. Topics include introduction to management issues in all aspects of the tourism industry including tourism organizations, related business and service industry, traveler behavior, planning, human resources, tourism research and marketing. Furthermore, the course will cover the role of tourism in economy and society from political-economic approach and functional approach; dimensions of tourism in Palestine; discourse on cultural heritage management and tourism.

Course Aims:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
  • Understanding of the travel and tourism industry.
  • Theoretical knowledge of the industry and related sectors, including knowledge of travel and tourism products and services, the infrastructure on which they depend and the transport system needed to operate them.
  • Differentiate between the different types of tourism. 
  • Practical ability in a range of skills and procedures related to working in the tourism industry, including  knowledge of the essential Personal and professional skills required by individuals working in the service sector;
  • Critical awareness of the physical, social and economic environments in which tourism takes place, including understanding of the global, regional and local perspectives of travel and tourism.

Course outcomes:

By the successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  • Use knowledge and skills associated with problem solving, creative and critical thinking, reflection and decision making to function effectively in the classroom, community and tourism industry.
  • Apply the concepts and skills necessary to achieve guests & tourisms satisfaction.
  • Demonstrate leadership and teamwork to achieve common goals.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of multicultural perspectives to meet the needs of the guests and employees.
  •  Lead with the knowledge that the foundation of tourism is based on the respect for the host culture with the responsibility to perpetuate the unique values, traditions, and practices of that place.
  • Use knowledge of best practices to further sustainability (economic, environmental, and cultural/social) in the  tourism industry.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform basic and supervisory level job functions in service industry.
