Course description:

This course introduces the concepts and techniques related to the design, planning, control, and improvement of manufacturing and service operations through review a holistic view of operations, where the course stresses the coordination of product development, process management, and supply chain management. As the course progresses, student will investigate various aspects of each of these three tiers of operations in detail, in addition to recognition topics in the areas of process analysis, materials management, production scheduling, quality improvement, and product design.

Course Aims:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
  • Develop an understanding of the importance of manufacturing supply chains and how operations can provide a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
  • Develop knowledge of the information technology tools necessary for manufacturing an integrated supply chain.
  • Identify how operations management contributes to the achievement of an organization’s strategic objectives.
  • Critically evaluate the operations function in manufacturing and service production settings.
  • Manage and apply forecasting methods as the basis of management’s planning and control activity.
  • Evaluate approaches to problem solving and process improvement in production settings.

Course outcomes:

By the successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  • Identify and evaluate the processes, tools and principles of operations management.
  • Describe the boundaries of an operations system, and recognize its interfaces with other functional areas within the organization and with its external environment. 
  • Explain and evaluate the quality processes in manufacturing and service sector.
  • Identify future challenges and directions that relate to operations management.
  • Identify the processes needed to develop a product from identifying the need to delivering the final product to the end user.
  • Apply the tasks, tools and underlying principles of operations management in the manufacturing and service sectors.
