Intro. To computer Networks GTEC 2305

Course description:

This course gives students a foundation in the study of data communications and computer networking. Topics covered will include basic data communications, the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) Model, Local Area Networks (LAN), common communications standards, mobile/wireless communications, internet protocol (IP) and transmission protocols (TCP and UDP).

Course Aims:

This course aims to enable the student to:
  • Understand fundamentals of data and computer communications.
  • Have a conceptual foundation for the study of data communications using the open system interconnection (OSI) layered architecture model.
  • Understand the Internet protocol (IP).

Course outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
  • Show a clear understanding of the basic concepts of data communications including the key aspects of networking and their interrelationship.
  • Be familiar with the fundamentals of data communications. 
  • Understand packet transmission in networks.
  • Become familiar with the basics of LAN and WAN technologies.
  • Understand the concepts and protocols of internetworking. 
  • Understand IP, TCP, and UDP in the Internet. 
  • Become familiar with well-known network applications.
