Engineering chemistry ENGI 1308

Course description:

This course provides and introduction to chemistry for engineers focusing on engineering needs. The course covers the material chemical and physical properties, measurements, the international system of measurements, structure of matter, Atoms, Electronic Structure of Atoms, Mass number, atomic number, the molecular weight of the atom, isotopes, periodic table. Reduction/oxidation, Chemical bonding, covalent Bond and ionic bond. Intermolecular forces, acidbase chemistry Student will study Thermochemistry, methods of calculating amounts of heat released or absorbed by the chemical reaction, gaseous state and properties.

Course Aims:

The aims of this course are to explore the following points:
  •  The basic understanding of the principal ideas in Chemistry with emphases on areas considered most relevant in an engineering context.

Course outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  •  Know and correctly use the language of chemistry (nomenclature, terminology, and symbolic representations).
  •  Understand and apply chemical facts, concepts, and models, and use them as a foundation to further study.
  •  Visualize the structure of matter and its reactions at the atomic and molecular (microscopic) level.
  •  Master qualitative and quantitative problem solving skills using basic mathematical skills.
  •  Use their knowledge to analyze and construct solutions for new and unfamiliar problems.
