Introduction to Linguistics EENG 2314

Course description:

The course includes the  six major fields involved in  linguistics studies:
 Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, lexicology, Syntax and Semantics including definitions and applications of each  field . 

Course Aims:

Course seeks to enable students to achieve the following objectives:
  • Define phonetics and to recognize the organs of speech, place and manner of articulation of vowels and consonants, syllable, Super segments and  -phonemes of English language.
  • Define Morphology and to recognize free morpheme, bound morpheme, derivational and inflectional   morphemes.
  • Define Lexicology, recognize word classes and to practice word formation process.
  • Define Syntax,  construct  the types of English sentences (simple , compound, complex, and compound).
  • Recognize types and  functions  of Phrase and clauses.  
  • Define Semantics and   to  practice  the  applications of synonyms, antonyms, homonym, collocations  and idioms.

Course outcomes:

At the end of the course the target students  are expected to:
