Course description:

This course is the second of three courses on written discourse. Writing II- is designed to introduce second language learners to the process, structure, and mechanics of essay writing. This course begins with a review of the paragraph format and sentence structure. This course introduces the students to different types of essays with various technical terms such as outline, coherence, cohesion, and transition signals. Emphasis will be put on writing effective thesis statements, introductions and conclusions. Students will write different types of essays including narrative essays, comparison essays, cause-effect essays, and argumentative essays. Students will also be taught how to edit their work.  

Course Aims:

Course seeks to enable students to achieve the following objectives:
  • To explore basic steps involved in the process of composing an essay. 
  • To introduce the students to different types of essays.
  • To study different rhetorical styles commonly used in English writing. 
  • To write effective thesis statement, introduction, and conclusion. 
  • To practice writing different types of essays and to edit their work.

  • Understand and produce the techniques by which academic writers communicate to academic audience.

  • Produce different types of essays that reflect various specific rhetorical modes.
