Course description:

The first of three courses on written discourse, writing-1-is designed to introduce L2 learners to the basic steps involved in the process of composing a paragraph. This course manipulates practical exercises and activities to deal with different elements that can affect the quality of a written product including grammar, punctuation, and capitalization. The course introduces students to writing paragraphs of different types such as definition, narrative, and process analysis.  Emphasis is put on writing effective topic sentences, supporting details, and conclusion sentences. This course engages students in group work for using prewriting techniques, editing, and proofreading of their work. This writing course provides students with contextualized input in English composition and paragraph organization and cohesion to build their skills in developing well-organized and coherent paragraphs.    

Course Aims:

Course seeks to enable students to achieve the following objectives:
  • To recognize that writing is an ongoing and creative process.
  • To develop a greater understanding of the writing process and master the basic components of paragraph composition.
  • To understand basic sentence structure, build better sentences, and master the skills needed to write competent paragraphs.
  • To develop mastery of accurate spelling, punctuation, and transition words.
  • To realize that writing is a skill that can be developed with practice.

Course outcomes:

By the end of this course, students are expected to:
  • Write effective topic sentences. 
  • Provide evidence and supporting sentences related to the topic sentence.
  • Write a well-organized and coherent paragraph.
  • Produce different types of paragraphs.
  • Manipulate pre-and post-writing techniques (brainstorming and peer editing)
