Course description:

Description of the course
This course aims at introducing the students the major approaches, methods and techniques used in teaching and learning English. However, the Audio-lingual method and the communicative approach and the synthesis method are given more attention in this course, as they are still adopted by many of the English language teachers in our schools. Lesson planning, testing and evaluation are also tackled. Besides that, the course is concerned with techniques of teaching pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar.

Course Aims:

Course objectives:  The course aims to enable students to:
  • Know the status of the English language in our schools in Gaza.
  • Be familiar with the basic methods and approaches used in teaching the Eng. Language.
  • Know the advantages and disadvantages of each method and technique.
  • Be aware of the factors influencing the various teaching methods.
  • Know when to use the mother tongue in an English lesson.
  • Prepare an English lesson plan for the elementary cycle. 
  • Implement an English lesson before the class.
  • Identify the types of testing.
  • Know how to build up an English test particularly an achievement test.
  • Know types of vocabulary and the difficulties in learning them.
  • Identify the appropriate technique for teaching grammar.
  • Get an idea about teaching pronunciation.
  • Know how to correct the pupils’ grammatical mistakes

Course outcomes:

Course outcomes: At the end of the course students are expected to be able to:
  •  Widen their knowledge theoretically with the different types of methods used in teaching the English language.
  • Apply what they learn theoretically to practicability while teaching English in the classroom.
  • Prepare and implement an English lesson plan.
  • Identify the different mistakes pupils make in pronunciation and grammar, while learning and avoid them.  
  • Build up a thorough test according to the table of specifications.
  • Understand the importance of the English language and its status in our schools, not only as a medium of teaching and learning but also as a dispensable requirement for a successful teacher.
