Course description:

This course addresses the use of the nursing process and using clinical judgment to promote health in the childbearing family during the process of reproduction, pregnancy, labor, delivery and the postpartum periods. In addition, any diseases and emergencies that may occur during pregnancy. Attention is also directed toward the normal newborn and the newborn at risk. In addition, to emphasis placed on nurse awareness of physical, nutritional, medication administration, mental, emotional, social needs and safety issues of the mother, the family and the newborn. 

Course Aims:

This aims of this course isto providing nursing studentswith knowledge and skills that enabling them to provide effective nursing care of both, and childbearing women as well as their babiesin addition to apply health assessment, formulation of nursing diagnoses to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings during the antepartal, intrapartal, post-partal, and neonatal periods.

Course outcomes:

At the end of the course, the students will be able to:
  • Discuss the human sexuality, structure and function of the reproductive organs and reproductive process and hormones related.
  • Describe the physiological changes underlying adaptation that occur during pregnancy, labour, and postnatal period.
  • Appraise the relationship between maternal reproductive changes and fetal growth and development.
  • Describe the mechanism of labour and care of the mother during its stages.
  • Discuss the post natal period and care.
  • Describe bleeding in early pregnancies and its management and nursing care.
  • Discuss diseases associated with pregnancy labour and postnatal.
  • Explore the obstetric emergency and mal-presentation mal position of the baby.
  • Assess the normal neonate, and identify the changes that occur during extra uterine life.
  • Provide the immediate nursing care of newborn and using Apgar's score.
