Course description:

This course focuses on assessment and management of well, acutely and chronically ill, and special needs children and their families. The effect the child's illness has on the family in hospital or community settings is emphasized. Principles of growth and development, nutrition, pharmacology, and ethics are reinforced and expanded. The course enable students to define and describe a specific pediatric condition with emphasis on etiology, clinical manifestations, expected course, treatment, and issues or problems associated with such conditions. In addition to that, the student will be able to utilize the nursing process; to formulate comprehensive nursing diagnosis, interventions and evaluation associated with the most common pediatric health conditions.

Course Aims:

The aim of this course is to develop in the student a basic understanding of acute and chronic health care nursing for children and their families. The student will be able to define and describe a specific pediatric condition with emphasis on etiology, clinical manifestations, expected course, treatment, and issues or problems associated with such conditions.
In addition to that, the student will be able to utilize the nursing process; to formulate comprehensive nursing diagnosis, interventions and evaluation associated with the most common pediatric health conditions.

Course outcomes:

After the completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Define basic concepts related to growth and development.
  • Identify role of pediatric nurse regarding well and ill children. 
  • Describe children playing in different stages of life.
  • List measures for health preventions and health maintenance of infants and children. 
  • Describe different health problems related to neonates, infants, and children at different pediatric settings. 
  • Integrate knowledge of primary health care initiatives in providing nursing care to children and adolescents.
