Course description:

This course designed to explore and focus on theoretical knowledge, skills concepts and principles of psychiatric and mental health nursing in a variety of contexts and situations (hospitalized patient –community mental health centers),  which to build the student's ability to be aware, deal with, and provide nursing care for the cases in mental health disorders at different health care settings, and help to develop the student's capacity of client health assessment, identifying nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation process of neurosis and psychosis clients, to influence the quality of psychiatric and mental health nursing care. The pharmacological aspects of the nursing care integrated throughout the course. Bio-psychosocial approaches are emphasized. Development of insight, self-awareness and therapeutic communication skills, this will enable the student to become an articulate and caring member of the interdisciplinary health care team.

Course Aims:

This course aims of this course is to provide students withknowledge and information about some of the psychiatric and mental health disorders, differentiate between neurosis and psychosis, understand and well aware about psychiatric disorders, construct trust therapeutic relationship with clients, implement mental state examination, numerate the roles of the mental health nurse, identify early warning and relapse signs of each disorder and construct andimplement mental health nursing care plane.

Course outcomes:

After the completion of this course the student will be able to:
  • The students will acquire the knowledge and concepts about psychiatric and mental health.
  • Understand the different types of mental diseases and how he can deal with different situations.
  • Can differentiate between normal and abnormal behavior. 
  • Able to deal with mental diseases safely.
  • Work effectively with multidisciplinary team in mental health field.
  • Apply the theoretical knowledge in real clinical field.
