Course description:

This course is designed for nursing students to help them to gain clinical skills and application of nursing care for pregnant mother through anti natal period and during labor and mother during childbearing period. Student can corporate theory with practice and can deal with mother and newborn student will be oriented to many diseases related to pregnancy and surgical operation done in obstetric departments the students will be able to provide effective nursing care of both, and childbearing women as well as their babies.

Course Aims:

The aim of this course will enable students to acquire knowledge, attitudes and skills in in rendering nursing care to normal and high-risk pregnant woman during antenatal, natal and postnatal periods in hospitals and community settings. It also helps the student to be able to apply the nursing process and problem solving techniques to promote physical, emotional, & social health and to manage ethical problems in the areas of reproductive health and safe-motherhood.

Course outcomes:

At the end of the course, the students will be able to:
  • To apply theory to practice for mother during the periods of preconception, pregnancy, labor and postnatal.
  • To gain competent skills needed to work efficiently in the primary and secondary maternal health services.
  • Demonstrate application of the nursing process in caring of the mother and newborn.
  • Demonstrate professional ability to utilize critical thinking in providing care for mothers during the antenatal, natal and postnatal period.
  • Apply appropriate health education strategies to enable the mother to promote the health of herself, family, and newborn including discharge planning.
