Medical Surgical Nursing 1 - Practical DNSG 1214

Course description:

This course provides opportunities for students to integrate knowledge and practice develop their practical competencies necessary to meet the needs of individuals throughout the lifespan in a safe, legal, and ethical manner using the nursing process. During this clinical course, students will have the opportunity to provide care to clients with various health needs. Emphasis is placed on providing peri-operative care is addressed including: surgical procedures, pre-operative care, post-operative care, aseptic technique, and complications common alterations in respiratory, diseases of gastro-intestinal, biliary system, hepatic disorder and endocrine systems. In addition to nursing intervention for all diseases conditions related to nursing management, nutrition, medications, health education, communication, and community concepts are integrated.

Course Aims:

The goal of this course allow the student able to apply and provide a cost effective, legal, and ethical management strategies to the care of clients with selected  health disorders and problems of different body systems.  

Course outcomes:

At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Apply knowledge, skills and attitude in giving nursing care.
  • Describe the role of the nurse in health promotion.
  • Utilize the nursing process in giving the holistic nursing care.
  • Providing preoperative nursing measures that decrease the risk for infection & other   postoperative complications.
  • Can do patient preparation, teaching and follow up care appropriate for patients having diagnostic testing of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Use the nursing process for care of patients with endocrine disorders. 
  • Describe the functions of hormones secreted by each of the endocrine glands.
  • Identify the nursing implications of the various procedures used for diagnostic assessment of respiratory function.
  • Develop plan of care for the patient receiving blood or blood component therapy.
  • Provide the patient with complete instruction on discharge for home consideration.
