Course description:

This course provides opportunities for students to develop competencies necessary to meet the needs of individuals throughout the lifespan in a safe, legal, and ethical manner using the nursing process. Emphasis is placed on providing care to individuals undergoing surgery, pre and postoperative care   and common alterations in respiratory, diseases of gastro-intestinal, biliary system, hepatic disorder and endocrine systems. Nutrition, pharmacology, communication, cultural, and community concepts are integrated

Course Aims:

The course aims to:
  • The goal of this course allow the student to apply safe, cost effective, legal, and ethical management strategies to the care of clients with selected  health disorders and problems of different body systems 
  •  Acquire integrated/applied knowledge, skills and attitude in giving nursing care
  •  Use the nursing process for care of patients with different diseases.
  •  Identify the nursing implications of the various procedures used for diagnostic assessment of respiratory function.

Course outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, student will be able to:
  • Describe the role of the nurse in health promotion
  • Utilize the nursing process in giving the holistic nursing care
  • Describe preoperative nursing measures that decrease the risk for infection & other   postoperative complications
  • Describe the patient preparation, teaching and follow up care appropriate for patients 
  •     having diagnostic testing of the gastrointestinal tract
  • Describe the functions of hormones secreted by each of the endocrine glands
  • Identify local resources available to the nurse when seeking information about infectious diseases.
  • Use the nursing process for care of patients with infectious disease.
  • Develop plan of care for the patient receiving blood or blood component therapy.
  • Describe the patient education and home consideration for patients who have had thoracic surgery.
