Contemporary Issues in Modern Biotechnology BIPH 5262

Course description:

The subject covers basic scientific knowledge andits application in biotechnology. Basic molecularbiology & practical applications, some historicalexamples, contemporary applications ofbiotechnology will be discussed to provide toolsand basic knowledge in order to understandbiotechnology. The emerging areas ofbiotechnology, for example MedicalBiotechnology, Agricultural Biotechnology,Bioremediation, Aquatic Biotechnology. Inaddition, the issues in Biotechnology such asgenetically modified food and organisms, embryosfor research/human cloning, ethical/legality/socialquestions & dilemmas will be discussed as well.

Course Aims:

  • Provide examples of current applications ofbiotechnology and advances in the different areas like medical, microbial, environmental, bioremediation, agricultural, and animal Biotechnology.
  • Describe the steps involved in the production of biopharmaceuticals in microbial and mammalian cell systems.
  • Explain and debate the positive and negative impacts of the biotechnology on society.

Course outcomes:

Upon completion of this course the students=should recognize the foundations of modernbiotechnology and should be able to:
  • Understand the difference between old, biotechnology and modern biotechnology.
  • Understand the concept of recombinant DNA technology or genetic engineering.
  • Analyze a research problem and write clear, step-by-step instructions for conducting=experiments for testing hypothesis.
