Course description:

The course explores the history of pharmacy and gives an overview of the evolution of pharmacy as a distinct profession that moved from focus on the drug to focus on the patient. Topics will include: conceptions of health and illness, the impact of Entlightment on the development of science, the implications of industrialization in the nineteenth century, the development of pharmaceutical profession. An introduction to the history of pharmacy law and the application of laws governing duties delegated to pharmacy technicians. State laws pertaining to pharmacy practice and drug distribution are discussed.

Course Aims:

The course will introduce students to the roots and historical development of pharmacy. When completed, the students should be familiar with the general chronology of the development of the profession of pharmacy, its literature, and the tools of the trade.Moreover, the students should understand that pharmacy is part of the larger context of sociopolitical, socioeconomic, and sociocultural development in which it resides, whatever the time period or geographical milieu. The course of pharmaceutical development has been, and will always be, informed and determined by these larger factors, which are best understood and interpreted through systematic historical analysis. The course aims to achieve the following:
To prepare students to assist the Pharmacist in collecting patient data and filling prescriptions.
Assist the Pharmacist in gathering patient information, medication review, and preparing medications for distribution according to state   laws.
Assist the Pharmacist in dispensing and distributing medications according to state laws.
Develop and maintain a professional standard including appearance, communication skills and the ability to function professionally as team member in healthcare.
Assist the Pharmacist in monitoring the practice site for compliance with all laws and professional standards.

Course outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • appreciate the complex interaction between pharmacy and society and the state.
  • know the historical roots of pharmacy education.
  • Know the pharmaceutical tradition and culture.
  • Know the pharmaceutical lows and ethics (local and regional).
