Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry 1 Lab BIPH 2111

Course description:

This course experiments included to fit in with the theoretical part of the general chemistry Course, and this course requires nine practical experiments covers the following topics: Determine the empirical formula, determine the formula of hydrated salts, limiting reactants, solubility and descriptive analysis and quantitative analysis, such as general scheme for testing of cations and anions, study concepts of Titration process using indicators.

Course Aims:

  • To promote proper laboratory practices and report preparation. 
  • Become proficient at handling chemicals and using laboratory equipment.
  • Reinforce material presented in the General Chemistry I recitation course.
  • Instruct the student in accurate and professional record-keeping. 

Course outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:  
  • Know location of safety equipment, be familiar with emergency procedures and proper laboratory attire.   
  • Understand laboratory report format and grading criteria.  
  • Use skills to assist in report preparation.   
  • Learn about data limitations and experimental uncertainties.  
  • Handle acids, bases, flammable and toxic substances.  
  • Proper use of balances, burets, Bunsen burners, various types of glassware, stands and clamps.  
  • Perform experiments on temperature and density measurements.  
  • Perform experiments illustrating stoichiometry and chemical reactions.  
  • Perform experiments related to gas laws, thermochemical concepts, and molecular structure.
