Course description:

This course provides the students with detailed knowledge on the treatment of adult patients and patients with Clefts.This course is given in a problem-based learning approach. It consists of tutorial sessions to analyze and discuss some orthodontic cases chosen to cover the following topics: 
  • Orthodonticdiagnosis and treatment planning. 
  • Earlyorthodontic treatment. 
  • Orthodonticmanagement of skeletal problems.
  • Assessmentof patients for orthognathic surgery.
  • Adjunctiveorthodontic treatment for adults, and Iatrogeniceffects of orthodontic therapy. 

Course Aims:

This course aims to provide students with knowledge and skills to act as an active participants in the teaching process through generation of hypotheses to explain the problems under discussion, contributing resources and knowledge to the group, and demonstrating the ability to understand and apply the available evidence to analyze the case.

Course outcomes:

By the end of this course, the students are expected to have:
  • Increased knowledge in the theoretical background of selected orthodontic topics. 
  • General knowledge of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning of certain cases. 
  • Understanding of selected orthodontic procedures. 
  • Critical thinking of resolving common orthodontic problems that are commonly encountered in the clinical practice.
  • Ability to recognize and classify the different types of malocclusion and define the cases suitable for orthodontic treatment.
  • Describe orthodontic treatment in adults. 
  • Overview of combined orthodontics and orthognathic surgical therapy. 
  • Understand the orthodontics for cleft lip and palate patients. 
  • Discuss the stability and retention of orthodontic treatment result. 
  • Recognize the adverse effects of orthodontic treatment. 
  • Deal with orthodontic emergencies.       
  • Clear understanding of the type of cases and orthodontic problems that need urgent care and referral to an orthodontic specialist.
