Course description:

This course covers topics of general oral medicine and the diseases of the organ-systems that have an impact on dental therapy and treatment of oral region disease processes as: Red and white lesions, Exophytic lesions, Aids, Diabetes, Endocrine and immunology. The course enables the student to effectively communicate with the patients, interview them and carry out a general appraisal and a detailed and systematic examination of the extra-oral and intra-oral structures. This is supported by clinical sessions in which students will see and manage patients with different oral lesions.

Course Aims:

The course is designed to expose the dental student to basic knowledge and skills that involved in the diagnostic process and treatment planning in dental practice. 

Course outcomes:

By the end of this course, students will be able to: 
  • Classify , identify the etiology, and describe the clinical pictures of the most common oral lesions. 
  • Clarify the diagnostic basis for diseases and conditions in the oral and para-oral structures .
  • Explain the risk factors, prevention and control of common oral and systemic diseases. 
  • Execute a systematic clinical extra and intra-oral examination .
  • Perform full documentation of cases by taking extra-oral and full mouth intraoral photographs , and recording all patient data. 
  • Differentiate clinically between normal oral variants and pathologic oral lesions.
  • Develop differential diagnosis of the most common oral lesions, select appropriate diagnostic aids and interpret their results to reach diagnosis of oral lesions .
  • Diagnose and manage the most common oral lesions , formulate appropriate prescriptions for oral medicine cases, recognize the role of the general dental practitioner in early diagnosis of oral lesions.
  • Outline dental management of some selected systemic disorders by installing precautions and modifications of conventional dental treatment.
  • Review mechanisms of action of the most commonly used drugs in dental practice to prescribe proper medication as part of patient management 
  • Show efficient and professional communication with patients, colleagues, instructors, clinical and laboratory staff.
