Dermatology BDNT 4170

Course description:

The course will cover the anatomy, physiology and immunology of the skin; an introduction to analysis and description of the skin; and principles of a comprehensive skin history and examination in the general practice setting. It will include common presentations in general practice including dermatitis (endogenous, and exogenous), psoriasis, acne, infectious disease, common maculopapular and urticarial eruptions, and cutaneous manifestations of internal disease.

Course Aims:

The course aims students to develop an understanding of common dermatological conditions presenting in dentistry, considering how these illnesses affect patients in the community, and to able students to take a focused history and examination and develop a differential diagnosis, and a management plan, including investigations, for patients with a dermatological condition.

Course outcomes:

Upon completion of the course the students should be able to:
  • Accurately describe the anatomy, physiology and appearance of the skin and skin lesions in the language of dermatology.
  • Assess a person’s skin and dermatological risk factors via comprehensive history, examination and appropriate use and interpretation of investigations.
  • Diagnose and appropriately manage common inflammatory and infectious conditions of the skin, hair, nails and mucosa and cutaneous manifestations of systemic conditions.
  • Diagnose and appropriately manage serious skin conditions and dermatological emergencies, including appropriate referral.
  • Diagnose pathological changes in the skin and recommend appropriate specialist for further treatment.
