Course description:

This course provides the student with an overview of dental community health issues, including demographic changes relating to health care delivery, the epidemiology of oral diseases, the utilization and financing of dental services, research methodologies appropriate to investigating oral public health concerns, and ethics in the public health setting.

Course Aims:

This course aims to provide students with the main oral health problems of their community and suggest therapeutic, preventive and educational solutions for these problems. Also it aims to prepare students to conduct a basic oral health survey for a target group plan and implement. a health educational program 

Course outcomes:

Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:
  • Discuss the scope and functions of dental public health. 
  • Describe demographic changes occurring in the population and discuss the implications those changes have for health care. 
  • Describe indices used in measuring oral diseases. 
  • Describe the risk factors, determinants and distribution of oral diseases. 
  • Discuss trends in and determinants of utilization patterns. 
  • Discuss public financing mechanisms for oral health care. 
  • Discuss ethical principles and issues in community dentistry.
