Oral Pathology I BDNT 3238

Course description:

The course covers  the basic principles of pathology and bacteriology. The course integrates knowledge of oral structures and function to the diagnosis, assessment and management of common lesions, with special emphasis on inflammatory/infectious and neoplastic diseases of oral soft and hard tissues. The course involves pattern association of the correlation of observed signs and symptoms with known patterns of disease to make a differential or definitive diagnosis.

Course Aims:

The course aims to improve the students ability to give differential diagnosis of different pathological lesions depending on both histopathological and clinical picture of the lesions.

Course outcomes:

By the end of this course, the students are expected to have learned the following: 
  • Give a brief introduction to principles of general pathology and inflammation.
  • Identify and describe normal and abnormal oral soft tissue lesions.
  • Demonstrate and apply the principles of infection control to the following clinical situation:
    1. Epithelial Tissue Tumors.
    2. Connective Tissue Tumors.
    3. Salivary Gland Tumors.
    4. Odontogenics Tumors.
    5. Dental Caries.
    6. Periapical Lesion.
