Periodontology I BDNT 3229

Course description:

This first course sets the scene for all the subsequent courses and covers the etiology of periodontal conditions, their diagnosis and assessment. The course also covers the fundamental role of bacterial biofilms, the risk factors for periodontitis in depth. There is also an introduction to the concept of assessing periodontal prognosis for individual teeth. 

Course Aims:

The course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge about periodontal conditions, etiology and risk factors involved in the development of periodontal diseases.

Course outcomes:

At the end of this course, the students should be able to:
  • Distinguish between healthy and diseased periodontium.
  • Understand the principal etiological and risk factors involved in the development of periodontal diseases.
  • Understand the importance of screening and assessment for periodontal disease in general dental practice.
  • Appreciate the factors influencing the assessment of prognosis for individual teeth.
