Histology BDNT 2317

Course description:

The coursecovers the microscopic anatomy dealing with the structures of cells, tissue and organs in relation to their functions. The basic component of the course will concentrate on the microanatomy of the four basic tissues, namely: epithelial tissue, including glandular tissue, connective tissue, muscular tissue, and nervous tissue. Also, the course deals with organs, systemic arrangement of tissues performing a specific function, as of respiration, digestion, etc. The practical part will cover virtual slides related to topics covered in the class and how to use the application of histology techniques to prepare tissue samples for morphological identification.

Course Aims:

The courseaimsto enable students acquire the ability and skills necessary for recognizing normal tissue and organ structure and organization, correlate and integrate structure of tissues and organs with physiological and biochemical function, and apply the knowledge and understanding of tissue structure and function to disease processes, pathologies, manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment.

Course outcomes:

After completing this course, students should be able to:
  • Describe he basic structures of human body: cells, tissues, organs, systems and their relationships with the whole body.
  • Explain the structural characteristics, distribution and function of the epithelium, glandular, connective, muscular, nervous tissue.
  • Identify, describe and classify the microscopic structure of human cells and the basic tissues types through the compound light microscope and virtual slides.
  • Identify a number of basic tissue-types from their microscopic appearance.
  • Understand why histology is essential for accurate diagnosis and monitoring of disease progression.
  • Identify, describe and classify the morphological features of the major organ systems in the human body.
