Architecture Design Studio I ARCH 3313

Course description:

This course covers analyse the types of residential buildings, for example raw house, semi-detached house, bungalow, douple house, low-rising apartment and high-rising apprtment or villa. This analysis would include the key reuirements for functional program, dimentional space and how interior space might be organized as far as each dwelling type is assigned.Examine the architecture design standard aligned to each residential type.Analyse key characteristic of residential types: for example the basic layout of housing units, taking into account the blocks in terms of shape and distribution on site, housing types, aspects and key architecture design criteria for each residential type.
Explore architecture concept, as this design studio could be the students’ first experience to handle such issue, thereby learning about architecture process, and how to defend and/or present their concepts.Involves smale-scal projects designed and supervised within the sudio lecture where each project would relate to learn about the each residential type’ architectural design; and Learn about the drawing techniques adopted to world-wide standard and address the question of how best to present the design.

Course Aims:

This course aims at: 
  • Enhancing students’ capability to handle design process, together with the key issues involved.
  • Understanding the key issues deemed essential to handle concepts of designing various residential buildings. This would include each types’ functional programme, circulation, construction system and asthetic aspects.
  • Identifying the characteristcs of each residential type and analysing how best to achieve a functional program, while acknowledging the design requirements of each dwelling type.
  • Exploring the basis to the design of each dwelling type: this would range from independent housing units, residential buildings and small housing projects.

Course outcomes:

The students upon completion of this course would be able to:
  • Be aware of the key issue embodied in the design process.
  • Acquire analytical skills when analyzing case studies of residential projects to be accomplished at the stage of preliminary design.
  • Have depth of knowledge in the many types of residential buildings, the design standard and functions requirements for each one.
  • Develop their design skills in terms of exploring the key issues involved in finalizing architecture concepts and how best to meet the architecture design requirements.
  • Learn about the key stages of the design process, together with each stage’s character and/or difficulty.
